FSV Mainz have dropped their reported interest in taking Socceroo Robbie Kruse on loan from Bayer Leverkusen according to German newspaper Bild.
As reported by FourFourTwo last week, Kruse has considered a loan move away from Leverkusen as he recovers from an anterior cruciate ligament injury ahead of the 2015 Asian Cup.
It is understood, Leverkusen’s wealth of attacking options could limit Kruse’s opportunities in the lead up to the tournament.
Leading German football website Kicker reported late last week that Mainz had identified the 25-year-old Socceroo as an ideal replacement for Hamburg-bound Nicolai Muller.
Kruse, who is contracted until June 2017, scored two goals and provided an assist back in September when Leverkusen thrashed Mainz 4-1.
However, according to Bild, Mainz have now dropped their interest in Kruse.
Kruse continued his recovery from his major knee injury over the weekend, coming off the bench after 68 minutes in Leverkusen’s 1-0 win at Southampton.
The former Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar attacker returned late last month as a 79th minute substitute in a 1-1 draw with Alemannia Aachen.
The reigning Australian Footballer of the Year sustained the ACL injury in January and subsequently missed the 2014 World Cup.comments
