Matildas beaten by Brazil ahead of Olympics

The Matildas blew a lead and had a player sent off as they lost 3-1 to Brazil in their pre-Rio Olympics friendly in Fortaleza on Sunday morning (AEST).

Katrina Gorry was sent off early in the second half for a second bookable offence when the visitors were leading 1-0.

Larissa Crummer opened the scoring on 35 minutes following a nice pass from Michelle Heyman, although the Brazil keeper might have done better.

Australia took that lead into the break, but the game changed when Gorry was given her marching orders for dissent.

Debinha poked home the equaliser just past the hour mark, after a missed clearance.

Raquel put the hosts ahead on 73 minutes with a clever lob over keeper Lydia Williams following a long ball forward.

Darlene added a third in stoppage-time, showing poise with a cool finish to round out the 3-1 win.

Matildas coach Alen Stajcic said: "When the game was 11 v 11, it was certainly more in our favour than it was for them.

"Playing 40 minutes with 10 players against them just made it a little bit tough but they are all things you have to learn to deal with.”

Australia opens its Olympic campaign against Canada in Sao Paulo on August 3.
