McKay hit with two-match ban for ref rant

Brisbane Roar great Matt McKay was been given a two match ban following his red card against Adelaide United in the opening match of the A-League season on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was sent off after a fiery outburst at referee Ben Williams saw him receive his second yellow of the match.

The Socceroo utility was originally facing a one-game suspension, but the A-League's match review panel took a dim view of his expletive-filled rant and added an extra game to his ban.

"The MRP has the authority to consider the incident as the player was issued with a direct red card," a statement read.

"The MRP proposed a sanction of the mandatory match suspension plus one additional match for the use of offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures against a match official".

McKay and the Roar have until Tuesday to appeal the decision. If the ban is upheld, he will miss the Roar's trip to Perth this weekend along with their third round clash against Sydney FC.
