Olyroos thrash Hong Kong as road to Rio begins

Australia have made an ideal start to their Rio 2016 qualifying campaign, thrashing Hong Kong 6-0 in Chinese Taipei on Friday.

Perth Glory forward Jamie Maclaren was the star with a hat-trick for the Olyroos as Aurelio Vidmar's side started the AFC U-23 Championship qualification stage well.

Connor Pain struck a brace and Mustafa Amini was also on the scoresheet.

The Olyroos face Chinese Taipei on Sunday before a clash against Myanmar two days later at the National Stadium in Kaohsiung.

Top spot in Group F would see Australia advance straight to the AFC U-23 Championship in Qatar in January next year.

The top three teams from that tournament will feature at Rio 2016.

Amini opened the scoring against Hong Kong before Pain doubled the lead just 20 minutes in.

Maclaren and Pain both netted before the former struck twice more to complete his hat-trick.
