Youth trumps marquee as Wanderers sign Nigerian defender

Western Sydney Wanderers have ended any chance of signing a foreign marquee in the upcoming season after Nigerian left-back Seyi Adeleke became the club’s fifth and final visa player.

After the headlines generated by Japan great Shinji Ono in the club's first two seasons, the Wanderers have opted for youth and versatility.

The 22-year-old Adeleke has signed a one-year contract from Swiss club Biel-Bienne where he was on loan from Serie A club Lazio.

“It is great to finalise our foreign player contingent with the signing of another young and versatile player,” Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said.

“We operate in a global marketplace and Adeleke’s signing indicates that we will look at all opportunities to improve our squad to truly reflect the region we live in.

“Adeleke is young, has a strong football pedigree and will significantly add to our roster. We look forward to welcoming him to the Wanderers family.”

The former Nigerian youth international will link up with the Wanderers in the coming weeks ahead of their campaign kick-off against Melbourne Victory on October 10.
