A bizarre DFL Supercup this year sees German football's curtain-raiser take place after the Bundesliga has already started. This, of course, is due to the long lasting knock-on effects of the coronavirus and not due to any new-age scheduling from the DFL.

Like the Charity Shield, the Supercup is traditionally played between the club that won the league and the club that won the cup but, as Bayern delivered a treble last season (with the Champions League landing on top of their domestic honours), the team that finished runners-up in the Bundesliga are invited instead.
After blowing away opponents in every competition last season, Bayern showed they are human after all with a 4-1 defeat away to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga last weekend. Dortmund were unable to capitalise on a rare slip-up from their illustrious rivals, losing 2-0 on the road to Augsburg.
With neither team wanting to lose any players to injury and with schedules already packed tightly, many have called for this year's edition of the Supercup to be scrapped. It is going ahead though, and Bayern coach Hansi Flick will have an opportunity to win his fifth straight trophy. He currently has more titles than defeats in his managerial career.
