Mauricio Pochettino will hope to win his first trophy as a manager when PSG face Marseille in the Trophee des Champions on Wednesday.
The Trophee des Champions is France’s equivalent of the Community Shield. PSG are the reigning Ligue 1 champions and also won last season’s edition of the Coupe de France, with Marseille qualifying for this one-off game by virtue of their second-place finish in the French top flight.
Pochettino replaced Thomas Tuchel in the Parc des Princes hot seat earlier this month. His first game in charge ended in a 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne, but the Argentine got off the mark a few days later as PSG beat Brest 3-0. That was not enough to return them to the summit of the standings, though, with Lyon still one point clear of the champions after 19 games. PSG remain heavy favourites to win the title, but Pochettino should not expect to have everything his own way in the months to come.
Marseille would love nothing more than to upset their arch-rivals at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Wednesday. Andre Villas-Boas’ side have been disappointing for much of the last month, though, with just one of their last five Ligue 1 matches ending in victory. Marseille have dropped down to sixth spot as a consequence, but they do have two games in hand on the teams above them. Win both of those and Villas-Boas’ men will be just two points off the top.
Neymar could make his return from an ankle injury here, although Pochettino will not want to rush the Brazilian back too soon. Juan Bernat is sidelined with a knee injury, while Thilo Kehrer and Rafinha both recently tested positive for COVID-19. Leandro Paredes, Presnel Kimpembe and Danilo Pereira will all need to be assessed before kick-off.
Luis Henrique will miss out for Marseille after testing positive for COVID-19, but Jordan Amavi and Morgan Sanson could be passed fit in time to make the matchday squad.
