Are Scotland out of the World Cup?

Scotland are officially out of the World Cup.

Steve Clarke's side knew their chances of making it through to the round of 32 were int the balance after their three-goal defeat to Brazil gave them less than a 50/50 chance of making it through.

Since then, practically everything has gone against them every step of the way to leave them with no hope of making it through.

Why Scotland are definitely out of the World Cup

The best eight of the third-placed sides from each group go through to the round of 32 alongside the top two sides from each group.

The remaining four third-placed sides are meanwhile eliminated from the competition alongside the sides who finished bottom of each group.

Ghana's defeat to Croatia on Saturday was the final nail in the coffin for Scotland.

That result meant that Ghana finished third with four points - and, crucially for Scotland, meant that at least eight other sides were guaranteed to finish above them on the ranking of third-placed sides.

For three of those sides, that came down to goal difference, which is used as the tie-breaker in that mini-league.

Senegal, Iran and South Korea all finished their groups with three points, like Scotland, but with a better goal difference.

Losing 3-0 to Brazil in their final group game was to blame, then - although it could yet transpire that they would have gone out even with a 1-0 defeat.

Even Iran and South Korea, with goal differences of 0 and -1 respectively, were on the brink going into the rest of Saturday evening's games.

A win for DR Congo and a draw between Algeria and Austria would mean two more groups would finish with their third-placed side on four points.

If that comes to pass, then in hindsight, only a draw against either Morocco or Brazil would have been good enough to have put Scotland through.
