Manchester United and Manchester City will renew hostilities in a one-legged League Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side continued their excellent recent form with victory over Aston Villa on New Year’s Day. United climbed into second place with that defeat of Dean Smith’s side, and have now gone 11 domestic matches unbeaten. The Red Devils have bounced back brilliantly from their Champions League elimination at the hands of RB Leipzig a month ago, and will now be looking to book their place in the League Cup final. City have dominated this competition in recent years, winning five of the last seven editions. They are the bookmakers’ favourites to lift the trophy again this term, but Pep Guardiola will be wary of a United team that have avoided defeat in four of the last five Manchester derbies. United will have to make do without Edinson Cavani, who is serving a suspension after breaching FA regulations with a social media post. Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are long-term absentees, while Victor Lindelof is also sidelined with a back injury. Solskjaer could stick with the same starting XI as the victory over Villa, with Paul Pogba operating from the left alongside Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford. The only change Solskjaer might consider is swapping Luke Shaw for Alex Telles at left-back. Back the draw with odds of 13/5 with Betfred right now.
City will be unable to call upon the services of Ederson, Eric Garcia, Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker, who are all believed to have tested positive for COVID-19. Aymeric Laporte is nursing a thigh injury and will play no part, but Ilkay Gundogan should shake off a knock in time to feature. Riyad Mahrez and Sergio Aguero are pushing for recalls, but Guardiola could opt to stick with the same shape that worked so well against Chelsea, with Kevin De Bruyne operating as a central striker.
