Aussie teen wins coveted spot at Nike Academy

Super teen, Emilio Martinez, has taken another huge step in his footballing career after earning a coveted spot at the Nike Academy.

The 16-year-old was one of just six players selected for the London-based academy after taking part in a global showcase featuring players from 30 countries.

Candidates were put through a series of trials with players from Belgium, Colombia, Japan, UK and US also making the cut.

The competition has proved a huge stepping stone for aspiring footballers. Previous winner Tom Rogic signed with Central Coast Mariners before joining Scottish giants Celtic.

Another picked for the showcase in the past is Brisbane Roar rising star Devante Clut.

Before heading off to England Martinez told the Parramatta Advertiser his aim was to make the Nike Academy.

“But even if I don’t, it opens up so many avenues for me,” he said. “My name is out there and known in the world.”

Nike Most Wanted Pacific head scout and former Socceroo Craig Moore said the Parramatta Eagles attacking midfielder impressed with his game smarts, technical ability and decision-making.

“I’m confident he has the skills and determination to make the most of this opportunity to play with some of the world’s best youth talent and coaches.”
