Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

The International Break came to a close during the week with the Socceroos just getting over Saudi Arabia with a 3-2 win and all of the major Leagues back in action.

Standout performer from the weekend was no doubt Matthew Leckie as he put in a solid performance in the Bundesliga, scoring a goal in the process, while Andy Rose put home the winner after coming on as a substitute for Seattle Sounders in the MLS.

We kick things off in England and Chelsea continued their great start to the season with a 4-2 win over Swansea. Mark Schwarzer was not in the squad. Fellow goalkeeper Brad Jones was absent for Liverpool as they went down unexpectedly to Aston Villa at the weekend. Mile Jedinak put in a full shift for Crystal Palace as they played out a 0-0 draw with new boys Burnley for whom Alex Cisak did not make the squad. West Brom went down 2-0 to Everton with Jason Davidson was absent for the Baggies, while Curtis Good was missing with a hip injury in Southampton’s 4-0 win over Newcastle United.

In the Championship, Scott McDonald got a full match under his belt as Millwall went down 1-0 to Ipswich Town. It was a good weekend for Reading Aussies as they beat Fulham 3-0 with Adam Federici playing a full match and keeping a clean sheet, and Ryan Edwards coming on in the 80th minute. For Fulham, Cameron Burgess and Ryan Williams were both missing, while Adam Taggart continues to recover from a groin injury. Rhys Williams continues his recovery from a ruptured Achilles and was missing for Middlesbrough as they beat Huddersfield Town 2-1.

Down to League One, and Massimo Luongo returned from Socceroos duties to play a full match for Bradford City, while James Meredith played until the 66th minute before being substituted. Brad Smith also got a full game for Swindon Town as they beat Bradford City 2-1 away from home. Bailey Wright and Neil Kilkenny both played a full match for Preston North End as they went down 3-1 to Walsall FC, while Shane Lowry played a full match for Leyton Orient in a 2-0 loss to Colchester United. Bradden Inman came on in the 68th minute for Crewe Alexandria as they beat Port Vale 2-1.

In League Two, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full match for Burton Albion as they beat York City 2-0, while James Wesolowski played a full match for Shrewsbury Town as they went down 1-0 to Stevanage FC.

Down to the Conferences and Lee Burns played a full match for Dartford FC in the Conference Premier Division (he also played a full match in the 2-2 draw with Eastleigh FC). Alex Baird was not in the squad for Gateshead FC as they beat Dartford 1-0, and also missed the squad earlier in the week when Gateshead beat AFC Telford United 4-1. Aaron Downes played a full match for Torquay United as they beat Grimsby Town 2-0, and also played a full match and scored in Torquay’s 2-0 win over Chester FC earlier in the week. Alex Grant was an unused substitute for Macclesfield Town as they beat Dover Athletic 1-0 but was not in the squad earlier in the week when they drew 1-1 with Halifax Town. Meanwhile, Daniel Collins was not in the squad for Wrexham FC as they beat Welling United 2-1, or earlier in the week when they went down 1-0 to Bristol Rovers. Joshua Riis was absent for Kidderminster Harriers who lost to Braintree Town 2-0 as well as 1-0 to Southport FC.

In the Conference North, Mitchell Austin was not in the squad for Brackley Town (Coached by Jon Brady) as they beat Hyde FC 1-0. In the South, Shane Huke was an unused substitute in Ebbsfleet United’s 2-0 win over Hayes & Yeading, and played a full match as they lost 3-2 to Weston-super-Mare earlier in the week.

In Under 21 action, Thomas Strain was an unused substitute for Aston Villa as they lost 2-0 to Arsenal with Jordan Lyden not in the squad. Josh Macdonald was not in the squad for Nottingham Forest as they beat Millwall FC 4-3, while Aaron Lennox played a full match and kept a clean sheet for Queens Park Rangers as they beat Sheffield United 1-0. Tom King didn’t make the squad for Bristol City as they beat Barnsley FC 2-0.

Over to Germany, and the best performance came from Matthew Leckie as he scored and put in a great shift in FC Ingolstadt 04’s 4-1 win over VfR Aelen in the 2. Bundesliga. In the Bundesliga, Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win over SC Freiburg, while Nikita Rukavytsya was not in the squad for FSV Mainz as they beat Hertha BSC 3-1. Robbie Kruse continues his recovery and isn’t too far away from a full return after a serious knee injury.as Bayer Leverkusen drew 3-3 with Werder Bremen,

In the 3. Liga, Mustafa Amini came on in the 80th minute in Borussia Dortmund II’s 3-0 loss against Arminia Bielefeld. While in the Regionalliga West, Brandon Chin was an unused substitute as FC Hennef 05 drew 0-0 with FC Schalke 04 II. Kwame Yeboah was not in the squad for Borussia Monchengladbach II in their 2-2 draw with RW Essen.

In the Mittelrheinliga, Sam Gibson was not in the squad for TSV Germania Windeck as they lost 2-0 to Alemannia Aachen II, while in the Bayernliga Sud Jonathan Faerber was not in the squad as TSV 1860 Rosenheim drew 0-0 with DJK Vilzing. In the Hessenliga, Max Haubus played a full match for SV Rot-Weiss Hadamar as they beat Buchonia Flieden 4-1.

In Italy, Joshua Brillante was an unused substitute for AC Fiorentina as they drew 0-0 with Genoa in the Serie A, while Panos Armenakas was not in the squad for Udinese Calcio as they went down 2-0 to Juventus. In the Lega Pro – Girone A, Liam Graham missed Aurora Pro Patria 1-0 win over UC AlbinoLeffe with a quad injury, while in the Campionata Primavera, Chris Ikonomidis was not in the squad as Lazio Youth’s went down 2-1 to Napoli Youth’s.

Over to Holland where Tommy Oar played a full match for FC Utrecht as they drew 0-0 with ADO Den Haag, Adam Sarota was an unused substitute and Michael Zullo continues his rehabilitation from a ruptured ACL. Trent Sainsbury played a full match for PEC Zwolle as they beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1, while Luke Wilkshire also played a full match and set up the goal as Feyenoord lost 2-1 to Willem II Tilburg at home. Eli Babalj was not in the squad as AZ Alkmaar lost 1-0 to SC Heerenveen.

In the Eerste Divisie, Luke Kairies was not in the squad for FC Eindhoven as they beat Achilles ’29 2-0, while Alistair Quinn was an unused substitute for SC Telstar as they lost 3-2 to De Graafschap. Kenneth Dougall was not in the squad for Telstar in that one. Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute for Fortuna Sittard as they lost at home 2-0 to Roda Kerkrade. VVV-Venlo had a 0-0 draw with MVV Maastricht with both Harry Ashcroft and Travis Cooper missing from the squad there.

In Belgium, Mathew Ryan played a full match as Club Brugge KV had a 1-1 draw with Racing Genk, while James Troisi played a full match for SV Zulte Waregem with a 4-1 loss to RS Waasland-Beveren at home not a great result.

Over to Portugal and just the one Aussie in action with Caleb Patterson-Sewell an unused substitute as Gil Vicente drew 1-1 with Pacos de Ferreira in the Primeira Liga.

In Russia, Ivan Franjic was an unused substitute as Torpedo Moskva went down 3-1 away from home to Spartak Moskva in the Premier Liga.

In the SuperLig in Turkey, Aziz Behich played a full match as Bursaspor beat Genclerbirligi 2-1 away from home, while in the 2. Lig, Emre Balci started for Diyarbakir BBSK as they lost 2-1 to Tepecispor.

Apostolis Giannou played a full match for Panionios in the Greek Superleague as they beat Asteras Tripoli 2-1, while Theo Markelis was not in the squad for PAE Veria as they beat AO Kerkyra 2-1 and Robert Stambolziev was an unused substitute as PAE Niki Volou lost 3-0 away from home to PAOK Salonica.

In Austria, James Holland played a full match for FK Austria Wien as they beat SV Ried 3-1 at home.

In the Liga I in Romania, Anthony Carter was not in the squad for CFR Cluj as they beat Astra Giurgiu 4-1.

Tomislav Mrcela played a full match for NK Lokomotiva Zagreb in Croatia’s Prva Liga as they drew 2-2 with RNK Split. Roko Strika was not in the squad for NK Zagreb as they drew 2-2 with Hajduk Split, and Steven Ugarkovic wasn’t in the squad for NK Osijek as they lost 1-0 to HNK Rijeka. Frane Vladislavic was absent from Dinamo Zagreb’s 2-0 victory over NK Istra 1961. In the Druga HNL, Mario Simic was not in the squad for NK Lucko, while Josip Konyit was an unused substitute for NK Inter Zapresic as they won that match 1-0.

Over to Switzerland, and in the Super League, Dario Vidosic played until the 69th minute as FC Sion went down 4-1 to FC Zurich, while Oliver Bozanic missed FC Luzern’s 3-2 loss to BSC Young Boys with a back injury.

Tom Rogic continues his absence with an adductor muscle injury as Celtic FC beat Aberdeen FC 2-1 in Scotland’s Premiership, while Jackson Irvine played a full match for Ross County as they went down 2-1 to Motherwell FC.

In Ireland, Mark Griffin was an unused substitute for both of Dundalk FC’s matches this week – the 0-0 draw in the FAI Cup quarterfinal against Shamrock Rovers, and the 5-0 win over Derry City in the Premier Division.

In the 3. Divisjon Avdeling 2 in Norway, Saka played a full match for Hasle-Loren IL as they lost 3-0 to Frigg Oslo FK, and also a full match earlier in the week as they lost 2-0 to Strommen IF 2.

Kile Kennedy played a full match and kept a clean sheet for KF Fjarðabyggðar in Iceland’s 2. deild karla in a 2-0 win against UMF Sindri Höfn, while in the Urvalsdeild kvenna, Carys Hawkins played a full match as Fylkir went down 4-0 to UMF Selfoss.

Evan Alexandro-Ridley was not in the squad for FK Ekranas in Lithuania’s A Lyga as they were smashed 4-0 by FK Atlantas.

Adrian Zahra was an unused substitute for Valetta FC in the Maltese Premier League in their 2-1 loss to Hibernians Paola.

Over to South America now, and in Argentina’s Quinta Gavin de Niese came on in the 60th minute as CA River Plate drew 1-1 with Boca Juniors.

In Ecuador, Richard Porta came on as a substitute for Independiente del Valle’s 1-1 draw with Mushuc Runa in the Campeonato Serie A.

In Asia, Joshua Kennedy was not in the squad for Nagoya Grampus in Japan’s J League as they defeated Yokohama F Marinos 2-0. Earlier in the week Kennedy also missed the squad for Nagoya’s 1-0 win over Thespakusatsu Gunma in the Emperor’s Cup, round of 16.

Petar Franjic was an unused substitute for Olmaliq FK as they lost 3-2 to Qizilqum Zarafshon in Uzbekistan’s Professional Futbol Ligasi.

In Qatar Stars League, Mark Bresciano played 87 minutes as Al Gharafa went down 1-0 to Lekhwiya SC.

Over in China, Josh Mitchell played a full match in the Super League as Liaoning Hongyun beat Shanghai Shenxin 3-0. Adam Hughes also put in a full shift as Haerbin Yìteng drew 2-2 with Henan Jianye while Daniel McBreen played a full match for Shanghai Dongya in a 3-0 win over Guangzhou Hengda. Ryan McGowan played a full match for Shandong Luneng Taishan as they beat Changchun Yatai 1-0, while Jonas Salley played a full match for Guizhou Renhe as they lost 2-0 to Dalian Aerbin at home.

In Korea’s K-League Classic, Alex Wilkinson and Luke DeVere were not in the squad for Jeonbuk FC and Gyeongnam FC respectively, Jeonbuk won that match 1-0. Wilkinson missed the match against Busan I’Park earlier in the week due to his Socceroos commitments while DeVere also missed the squad for Gyeongnam as they drew 0-0 with Incheon United. Aleksandar Jovanovic played a full match for Jeju United as they drew 0-0 with Suwon Bluewings. He also played the full 90 earlier in the week as Jeju beat Sangju Sangmu 2-1. Robert Cornthwaite came on in the 73rd minute as Jeonnam Dragons went down 1-0 to Sangju Sangmu, and earlier in the week he came on in the 79th minute as Jeonnam lost 1-0 to Pohang Steelers.

In Hong Kong’s Premier League, Joey Gibbs played a full match, Aaron Evans played until the 67th minute and Daniel Linstead was not in the squad as Tai Po FC were hammered 4-1 to Kitchee SC in a rearranged match.

In Myanmar, Matthew Acton played a full match for the Eric Williams coached Yangon United as they beat Southern Myanmar 8-0 in the National League.

In US Major League Soccer, Tim Cahill played until the 75th minute as New York Red Bulls drew 2-2 with Philadelphia Union, while earlier in the week he came on as a 71st minute substitute in their 1-0 win over DC United. Andy Rose came on in the 66th minute for Seattle Sounders, scoring the winning goal in a 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake City.

In the USL Pro quarterfinal, Harrison Delbridge was an unused substitute for Sacremento Republic as they beat Wilmington Hammerheads 4-1. Neither Yahaya Musa nor Albert Edward was in the squad for Wilmington. They also missed the squad for Wilmington’s 2-0 loss to Rochester in the final league match earlier in the week.

Last up, and in Kenya, Ian Niva was not in the squad for Gor Mahia FC as they drew 1-1 with Tusker FC.
