Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

The Socceroos weren’t the only Aussies picking up silverware this week, with World Cup hero Brett Holman setting up a goal as his Al Nasr side claimed the United Arab Emirates League Cup.

Apostolis Giannou scored again in the Greek Superleague, while in England, Adam Taggart was on the scoresheet for Fulham and Gethin Jones set one up for Blackburn Rovers as the side’s drew 3-3 in the U21’s.

In action from friendly matches, both Ryan Griffiths and Gavin de Niese netted goals, while Steven Ugarkovic set up a goal for new club Gorica in Croatia.

Starting with the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer played a full match as Leicester City lost 3-1 away to Manchester United. Mile Jedinak was missing due Socceroos commitments as Crystal Palace lost 1-0 at home to Everton FC. Jason Davidson was also missing due Socceroos commitments as West Bromwich Albion suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Brad Jones was missing due to injury as Liverpool FC won 2-0 at home to West Ham United. Curtis Good was not in the squad for Newcastle United as they won 3-0 away to Hull City. Alex Cisak was also not in the squad as Burnley FC lost 2-0 at Sunderland AFC.

In the Championship in England, Adam Federici played a full match and kept a clean sheet as Reading FC won 2-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Chris Herd was missing due to injury for new club Wigan Athletic as they played out a goalless draw away to Ipswich Town. Rhys Williams was also missing due to injury as Middlesbrough FC won 1-0 away to Brentford FC. Adam Taggart was not in the squad for Fulham FC as they lost 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers. In an earlier match Federici played a full match and kept another clean sheet as Reading played out a goalless draw with Millwall FC.

In the English League One, James Meredith played a full match as Bradford City came back to draw 1-1 at home to Colchester United. Bradden Inman came on in the 73rd minute as Crewe Alexandra were hammered 5-0 at home by Milton Keynes Dons. Shane Lowry was an unused substitute for Leyton Orient as they suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Scunthorpe United. Neil Kilkenny was an unused substitute while Bailey Wright was not in the squad for Preston North End as they lost 2-1 away to Crawley Town. Massimo Luongo was missing due to Socceroos commitments as Swindon Town lost 2-0 away to Sheffield United.

In League Two in England, Callum Elder played a full match for Mansfield Town as they lost 2-1 away to Carlisle United, for whom Mitchell Austin was not in the squad. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was an unused substitute as Burton Albion won 1-0 at home to Bury FC. James Wesolowski was missing due to injury as Shrewsbury Town won 1-0 away to Newport County.

In the second leg of semi-final ties in the English League Cup, Brad Jones was again missing due to injury as Liverpool FC lost to Chelsea FC 1-0 after extra time on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.

In the English Conference Premier, Aaron Downes played a full match for Torquay United as they played to a scoreless draw with Wrexham FC. Lee Burns also played a full match as Dartford FC drew 2-2 at home to Bristol Rovers. Alex Baird was not in the squad for Gateshead FC as they won 1-0 away to Southport FC. Thomas Strain was not in the squad for either match as Chester FC first ran out 4-0 winners at home to Lincoln City before winning 3-1 at Welling United.

In the Conference South in England, Jeremy Walker played a full match as Concord Rangers won 1-0 away to Havant & Waterloville.

In the English Isthmian Premier League, Taylor Tombides played until the 65th minute as Canvey Island won 5-2 at home to Tonbridge Angels. Shane Huke was missing due to injury as top of the table Maidstone United won 1-0 away to Kingstonian FC. In matches played earlier in the week, Huke played until the 54th minute as Maidstone won 2-1 away to Bury Town. Tombides played until half-time as Canvey played out a 1-1 draw with Metropolitan Police.

In the second leg of semi-final ties in the Football League Trophy in England, Neil Kilkenny played a full match while Bailey Wright was not in the squad for Preston North End as they played to a 0-0 draw with Walsall FC, who progress to the final with an aggregate score of 2-0.

In the U21 English Premier League Division One, Adam Taggart played a full match and scored the opening goal of the game for Fulham FC U21 as they drew 3-3 away to Everton FC U21, for whom Gethin Jones played a full match and set up a goal in first half stoppage time. Thomas Beadling played a full match as Sunderland AFC won 1-0 at home to Manchester City U21. Brad Smith was not in the squad for Liverpool FC U21 as they lost 2-1 away to Manchester United U21. Meanwhile in Division Two, Jordan Lyden was not in the squad as Aston Villa U21 won 1-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers U21, for whom Hyuga Tanner was also not in the squad. Peter Skapetis was missing due to injury as Stoke City U21 were hammered 7-1 away to Derby County U21.

In the U21 PDL League 2 – South Division in England, Giancarlo Gallifuoco played a full match and James Demetriou was an unused substitute as Swansea City U21 won 2-1 at home to Queens Park Rangers U21, for whom Aaron Lennox played a full match.

In the Italian Serie A, Josh Brillante was an unused substitute for both matches as Empoli FC first lost 2-1 away to Udinese before playing to a 1-1 draw away to AS Roma. Chris Ikonomidis was also an unused substitute as SS Lazio lost 2-1 away to AC Cesena.

In the Serie B in Italy, Mark Birighitti was not in the squad as AS Varese won 2-1 away to Virtus Lanciano.

In the Lega Pro in Italy, Liam Graham was not in the squad as Aurora Pro Patria drew 1-1 at home to Real Vicenza.

In the Campionato Primavera in Italy, Panos Armenakas came on in the 73rd minute as Udinese Youth drew 1-1 with Inter Milan Youth. Chris Ikonomidis was not in the squad for Lazio Youth as they lost 2-0 away to AS Bari Youth.

In the Eredivisie in the Netherlands, Luke Wilkshire played until the 18th minute before leaving the pitch with injury as Feyenoord won 2-1 at home to ADO Den Haag. Trent Sainsbury was missing due to Socceroos commitments as PEC Zwolle won 2-0 away to FC Utrecht, for whom Tommy Oar was also missing due to Socceroos commitments and Michael Zullo was missing due to injury. Eli Babalj was absent (trailing at PEC Zwolle) as AZ Alkmaar won 3-1 at home to Heracles Almelo.

In the Dutch Eerste Divisie, Kenneth Dougall played a full match while Alistair Quinn was an unused substitute for SC Telstar as they lost 2-0 at home to De Graafschap. Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute as Fortuna Sittard played out a scoreless draw with Achilles ’29. Luke Kairies was missing due injury for FC Eindhoven as they won 2-1 at home to Jong PSV.

In the quarterfinals of the KNVB-beker in the Netherlands, Sainsbury was missing due to Socceroos commitments as Zwolle beat SC Cambuur 3-2 in extra time after the match finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. Eli Babalj was not in the squad for AZ Alkmaar as they lost 3-0 away to FC Twente.

In the Dutch Beloften Eredivisies, Babalj played until the 73rd minute as Jong AZ Alkmaar played out a 3-3 draw with VVV/Helmond.

In the German Bundesliga, both Robbie Kruse (Bayer Leverkusen) and Mitch Langerak (Borussia Dortmund) were missing due to Socceroos commitments as the sides’ played out a goalless draw.

In the German 3. Liga, Mustafa Amini played a full match as Borussia Dortmund II lost 3-0 away to Jahn Regensburg.

In the Belgian Eerste Klasse, Mat Ryan was missing due to Socceroos commitments as Club Brugge KV maintained top spot on the ladder with a 2-0 home win against KV Oostende. James Troisi was also missing due to Socceroos commitments as SV Zulte Waregem played out a scoreless draw with RSC Anderlecht.

In the Primeira Liga in Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute for Gil Vicente as they drew 1-1 at home to Vitoria Setubal.

In the Turkish SuperLig, Aziz Behich was missing due to Socceroos commitments as Bursaspor drew 2-2 away to Galatasaray SK.

In the 2. Lig in Turkey, Emre Balci played a full match as Diyarbakir BBSK won 1-0 at home to Tepecikspor AS.

In the Turkish 3. Lig, Kaan Korkmaz was not in the squad as Sakaryaspor drew 1-1 away to Kahramanmaras BB.

In the Turkish Kupasi, Balci played until the 63rd minute as Diyarbakir drew 1-1 with FBM Yasamspor. Behich was again not in the squad due to Socceroos commitments as Bursaspor beat Mersin İdmanyurdu 5-0.

In the Greek Superleague, Apostolis Giannou played a full match and scored to help Panionios GSS to a 2-1 home win over Panthrakikos. Theo Markelis was not in the squad as Veria FC lost 2-0 at home to Olympiakos.

In the Greek Football League 2, Giannis Simosis came on in the 58th minute as league leading Panargeiakos FC lost 1-0 away to AO Loutraki. Billy Konstantinidis was missing due to injury for Doxa Dramas FC as they played to a scoreless draw with Panserraikos. In another match, Simosis came on in the 57th minute as Panargeiakos played out a 1-1 draw with Panarkadikos.

In second leg round of 16 ties in the Kypello Elladas in Greece, Theo Markelis did not play for Veria FC while Apostolis Giannou also did not play for Panionios GSS as the sides played out a 1-1 draw. Panionios advanced to the quarterfinals with an aggregate score of 3-2.

In the Scottish Premier League, Jackson Irvine played a full match while Cameron Burgess was not in the squad as Ross County drew 1-1 with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

In the semi-finals of the League Cup in Scotland, Ryan McGowan played a full match for Dundee United as they won 2-1 against Aberdeen FC. Tom Rogic was not in the squad for Celtic FC as they won 2-0 over local rivals Rangers FC.

In the League Cup Final in the United Arab Emirates, Brett Holman played a full match and set up one goal as Al Nasr claimed the cup with a 4-1 win over Sharjah SC.

In the I-League in India, Milan Susak played a full match for East Bengal as they won 1-0 at home to Bengaluru FC, for whom Sean Rooney also played a full match. Tolgay Ozbey was missing due to injury as Dempo SC won 3-0 at home to Sporting Goa, for whom Jerry Karpeh came on in the 67th minute. In other matches, Susak played a full match as East Bengal won 2-1 at home to Shillong Lajong. Karpeh also played a full match as Sporting Goa lost 2-0 at home to Salgaocar SC. Rooney played until the 70th minute as Bengaluru won 4-0 away to Royal Wahingdoh.  

In the Hong Kong League Cup (Playoff Round 2), Dylan Macallister played a full match for Eastern Salon as they won 3-0 at home to Yuen Long.

In the Myanmar National League, James Meyer played until the 65th minute as Yadanarbon FC won 2-1 away to Manaw Myay.

In the Premier League International Cup friendly tournament, Kwame Yeboah played a full match as Borussia Monchengladbach II lost 1-0 to Norwich City U21 of England.

In the Copa Chivas friendly tournament, Gavin de Niese played a full match and scored the final goal of the game as CA River Plate won 3-0 against Monterrey. In an earlier match, De Niese played until the 55th minute as River beat Tigres 2-1.

In further club friendlies played this week, Ryan Griffiths played for Malaysian club Sarawak FC and scored the opening goal of the game as they drew 2-2 away to NS Matrix FC. Oliver Bozanic played until the 64th minute as FC Luzern won 3-1 over FC Lugano. Ben Halloran played until the 62nd minute as Fortuna Dusseldorf played out a scoreless draw with SV Meppen. Mark Griffin played for Bohemian FC until half-time as they lost 2-1 to Wexford Youths. Steven Ugarkovic came on in the 46th minute and set up one goal as HNK Gorica ran out 5-0 winners over NK Spansko. Dario Vidosic came on in the 60th minute as FC Sion played out a goalless draw with FC Chiasso. Anthony Carter was an unused substitute for CFR Cluj as they lost 3-2 away to Gyirmot FC.

With the transfer window set to close today, some Aussies have been on the move this week.

Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has agreed to join Italian Serie B side AS Varese on a six month loan deal. NK Osijek midfielder Steven Ugarkovic has joined Croatian second division side HNK Gorica on loan for the remainder of the season to help their promotion push. Injured Socceroo Chris Herd has moved to English Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan from Aston Villa, while Millwall striker Scott McDonald has had his contract cancelled by the club to enable him to find a new team.
