Durakovic: I wouldn’t swap this medal for the world
Mehmet Durakovic charmed reporters after guiding Selangor to a 2-0 victory in the Malaysia Cup final over Kedah, stating he would not trade his success "for the world".
The trainer walked into a packed press conference room a proud man after ending his side's 10-year wait for an historic 33rd cup when a reporter asked if he could have the Australian’s medal, while another chimed “you already have three medals.”
The former Selangor skipper – who won three back-to-back of Malaysia Cups as a player in the mid-'90s – responded in a way that only showed how much he loves Selangor and even claimed the Red Giants were the Manchester United of Malaysia.
“I wouldn’t swap this for the world … I may have three other medals but this is my first as a coach,” said Durakovic.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet but this a dream come true for sure. Selangor are the [Manchester] United of Malaysia and it [the club] belongs at the top. I want to keep this [record of success] going so the days when Selangor won trophy after trophy return. It was great seeing the fans enjoy themselves at the final.
“It is an honour to lead the team I love to the trophy after so many barren years. This is something money can’t buy.”
The feelings Durakovic has for Selangor and its fans are mutual but the same cannot be said of the Selangor management, who had provisionally lined-up Zainal Abidin Hassan for the 2016 season despite Durakovic having a year left on his contract.
Even Football Association of Selangor (FAS) president Azmin Ali did not provide any certainty on Durakovic’s future after the match, saying there was a need to discuss the matter at board level.
“Durakovic has done a great job and we need his service to be considered. It will be discussed by the management and we need to reach an understanding with all parties before we decide his future,” said Azmin.
“There is a lot of speculation on the ground and it is not fair to make statements based on speculation. I rather we discuss this first and then make an announcement.
“We need to ensure that Selangor will continue to excel in the future. I think Durakovic has done his best to bring back success to the team and it was proven tonight.”
