Perth Glory target James Wesolowski has left League One club Oldham to sign with English fourth tier outfit Shrewsbury on a two-year deal.
Glory coach Kenny Lowe was understood to have approached the Sydney-born 26-year-old about joining Perth on a recent scouting trip of the United Kingdom.
Wesolowski was out of contract at Oldham but has made the decision to drop down a division despite winning the Latics’ player of the season this term after a stellar campaign in midfield.
The former Australia youth international denied suggestions the move was a step down, citing Shrewsbury’s ambition.
”Some might say that but it’s not just about now but also about the future and I know Shrewsbury have some promising plans in place for the future,” Wesolowski told the club’s website.
“The manager was very adamant that the aim for this season is to get the team get back into League One and then challenge in League One the season after that.
“There have been some great signings for Shrewsbury and with the management in place the club is more than capable of getting promoted.”
Wesolowski’s decision is a blow for Glory who have lost a number of midfielders this off-season including Jacob Burns, Steven McGarry, Travis Dodd, Adrian Zahra and Ryan Edwards.
Glory have already signed midfielders Ruben Zadkovich and Youssouf Hersi plus Andy Keogh, Dino Djulbic and Diogo Ferreira this off-season, while Danny Vukovic has returned from a loan spell in Japan.comments
