Mariners make fronds with Umbro after kit calamity

Central Coast Mariners have signed a two-season deal with kit supplier Umbro, bringing the axe down on the torso-grabbing palm tree.

The 2015/16 kit was widely pilloried on social media and among fans despite the club’s insistence the eye-catching growth emblemised the region.

Palmed off - last season's unloved kit

In a statement Mariners said Umbro Australia will provide the Mariners with award-winning UK designed football kits with “small details” unique to the Central Coast.

The iconic football apparel, footwear and equipment brand is responsible for the kits of Everton, West Ham United, FC Nantes (France) and the Irish national team.

The Mariners began pre-season training on Monday, donning their Umbro training apparel for the first time.

Both club and suppliers are said to be close to finalising a suite of official club merchandise and playing strips for the upcoming season.
