Monty: I want to end my days here

Central Coast Mariners midfielder Nick Montgomery wants to see out his career at Bluetongue Stadium and is keen to play into his late thirties.

The 32-year old joined the Mariners in 2012 from English League One side Sheffield United and is in his second season in the A-League. The Englishmen has made 49 appearances and scored one goal for the yellow and blue, and has played in every match this season.

“I love it out here,” Montgomery said. “Not just the lifestyle, the football. The Mariners is a fantastic club and I don’t think I could have come to a better club. Obviously the success we had last season, in the league, the grand final and the last 16 of the Asian Champions League was a great experience.

"But it’s just made me hungry to go again and try and improve on last season. Although it’s been a difficult season with changeover of staff and players, we’ve put ourselves in a great position.”

Montgomery was an integral part of the Mariners’ rise to the grand final last season, at the base of the club’s midfield, but missed out on the decider against Western Sydney because of suspension. The long-time Blade knocked back offers from Major League Soccer in the US and from the Championship in the UK to come to Australia, and has another season to run on his three-season deal with Central Coast.

In the current campaign he has been a regular in the club’s XI as they sit in third position on the ladder just behind Brisbane Roar and the Wanderers.

Montgomery is keen to stay with the A-League champions and the Mariners vice-captain says he will look to extend his contract.

“I’m 32 and I want to look to stay out here and hopefully that’ll be at the Mariners,” he said.

“I’d love to [finish my career here]. I’ve probably got another five, six years left playing at this level so. To be honest, I’ll see what happens but definitely happy at the minute. My wife and kids love it out here. We’ve made a lot of friends and it’s just a great place to live with families.

"The main thing is I’m enjoying my football and when I enjoy that then my family life’s good.”
