Newcastle jettison James Virgili
Fan favourite Taylor Regan, along with Sam Gallagher, John Solari, Allan Welsh and Travis Cooper were shown the door earlier on Tuesday.
The club said the Virgili announcement was delayed because a meeting with coaches had to be scheduled to fit in with the player’s other commitments.
In a brief statement the Hunter outfit said the midfielder would not be offered a new contract.
“Virgili has spent a long period at the club,” the statement read. “Indeed, when he made his Jets debut against Wellington Phoenix in 2009 he was the Hyundai A-League’s youngest ever player.
“Newcastle Jets wish James Virgili good luck in the future.”
