Real Madrid remain 'most valuable' sports team

Real Madrid – currently in Melbourne ahead of their International Champions Cup (ICC) campaign – have retained top spot in Forbes magazine’s list of the 50 most valuable sports teams in the world.

Valued at $US3.26 billion – down five per cent on last year – the 10-times European champions eclipsed NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and baseball’s New York Yankees, both on $US3.2 billion.

The Spanish superstar team, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, will take on Italian side Roma in Saturday night’s ICC opening clash at the MCG.

Madrid’s El Clasico rivals, Barcelona, came in at fourth at $US3.16 billion followed by English Premier League giants, Manchester United on $US3.1 billion

American basketball, football and baseball teams were prominent with the Los Angeles Lakers, New England Patriots, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Redskins rounding off the top 10.

The average value of the 50 teams on the list has jumped 31 per cent on last year to $US1.75 billion.
