EXCLUSIVE: Young Socceroo Ryan Williams has extended his loan deal with table-topping League Two club Oxford United until the end of the season.
Williams, who is on loan to Oxford United from Premier League club Fulham, has been in impressive form for The U’s since joining in August and has already scored four goals.
“Myself and Fulham think it’s the right thing to do at the moment as I’m getting good exposure, getting good game-time,” Williams said.
“It’s the not best level but you have to start somewhere, I have to get the appearances to then go on to bigger and better things.”
The winger is targeting promotion to League One with Oxford United who sit on top of the division with 37 points, after just three losses from their first 20 matches. The top three teams from League Two are promoted into League One along with the winner of the playoffs.
“It’s good because we have some good players and we really know how to grind out results now,” Williams said.
“We haven’t lost away from home since the start of the season. It’s looking good for automatic promotion. At the start it was quite hard coming to the team because we were winning and obviously I had just gotten there.
"I knew when I got my chance I had to take it, and I haven’t looked back since.”
Williams has appeared in 17 league and cup games for United, banging in four goals and recording one assist. The 20-year old, who originally moved to the UK with Portsmouth in 2010, has been pleased with his goal-scoring form.
“That’s something that I always thought I could do but I never really got the chance to,” Williams said.
“Then I started to get chances and create chances for myself. I’ve just been composed enough to put them away.
"I’m just really happy here at the moment, I’m really confident and all the boys and the manager and the fans give me confidence.”
Oxford United manager Chris Wilder is delighted to have Williams on board the rest of the season.
“It’s good for everyone concerned,” Wilder said in a club statement. “Ryan is a talented player and has done well for us.
"He is enjoying his time here and Fulham can see him gaining experience and playing well. The fans have taken to him and he fits in really well with the lads in the dressing room, so we are really happy that he is our player for the rest of the season.”
The younger brother of Socceroo defender Rhys Williams, Ryan is a product of ECU Joondalup in Perth. He has 12 appearances for the Young Socceroos under his belt and his keen to one day join his brother in the senior national team.
“Every Australian footballer wants to play for the Socceroos, especially when their older brother is starting every week for them,” Williams said.
“That’s something that I really, really want to do but at the moment I just need to concentrate on my club football and obviously playing well at club football will get you a call-up.
"Whether it’s now or in five years or 10 year times, I just want to play for them.”
