Socceroo Rhys Williams back for Boro

Socceroo Rhys Williams has been declared fit for pre-season training after suffering a ruptured Achilles in January which ruled him out of the World Cup.

The Middlesbrough squad returned to Rockliffe on Monday and coach Aitor Karanka said the Aussie utility was making solid progress.

Boro are managing a number of long term injuries ahead of the Championship season, including Mustapha Carayol who still has two months on the sidelines.

Injury-cursed Williams was in a desperate race against the clock to make the Aussie team for Brazil after missing South Africa 2010 with a pelvic injury.

It was always a long shot, but a fit Williams will be a bonus for Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou come January when Australia hosts the Asian Cup.

Gazette Live reports the 25-year-old is not yet ready for full contact sessions but has been working diligently in the gym and will join his teammates this week.

“Rhys will be with us for pre-season,” Karanka said.

“His recovery is coming along very well.

“He will work with the first team squad and we hope he will be fit for the start of the matches.”
