Villa-linked Luongo shines at League One awards

Aston Villa transfer target Massimo Luongo has been voted one of the best players in League One.

The Socceroo came in at fourth in a vote by rival managers at the Football League Awards on Wednesday night following a superb season for promotion-chasing Swindon Town.

And according to reports in the Daily Mail, the Australian’s exploits for club and country haven’t gone unnoticed, with the playmaker expected to be plying his trade at a higher level next season.

Villa boss Tim Sherwood, who coached the Sydney-born rising star at Tottenham, is speculated to have made him a priority transfer target in the English summer.

Sherwood has been spotted at Town’s County Ground in recent weeks keeping tabs on the 22-year-old and is interested in bringing him to Villa Park.

Luongo has enjoyed a dream season, named player of the tournament during Australia's successful Asian Cup in January while scoring six times in 36 games for the Robins.

Having joined Spurs in 2011, Luongo played with the club’s youth team and made just the one senior appearance before joining Swindon permanently in 2013.
