Wanderers sign Tanaka for ACL

Western Sydney Wanderers have signed Japanese full-back Yusuke Tanaka for the start of their AFC Champions League defence.

Tanaka featured for Kawasaki Frontale in the J.League this season and can play on both the right and left sides of the back four – positions Tony Popovic's squad needed bolstering in.

The 28-year-old has signed for the group stage of the Champions League, as well as potentially the round-of-16 tie.

Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas believes Tanaka will have no problems settling in.

“Yusuke is a fantastic addition to our squad and brings a great deal of experience to the Wanderers,” he said in a statement.

“He is a talented and capable defender who can play either side of defence and having seen first-hand his work rate we feel that he will fit into both our style of play and our team culture very well.”

The Wanderers face Guangzhou Evergrande, Kashima Antlers and a play-off winner in Group H of the Champions League.
