Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic is hoping Spanish import Andreu Mayoral will be fit for the start of the season, with injury sidelining the midfielder for about four weeks.
The former Racing Santander man suffered a knee injury in Wanderers’ hard fought 1-0 FFA Cup win over Brisbane Roar on Tuesday.
Scans confirmed Mayoral had not been as badly injured as first feared.
Only this week winger Romeo Castelen told FourFourTwo he was building a good on-field rapport with the 32-year-old.
Popovic told News Corp: "We're happy he hasn't suffered something more severe, and there's nothing we can do.
"Already it feels a touch better to him than it did the day before so that's promising. If it is just four weeks, then he might be ok for the start of the season."
It means Mayoral will be absent for the Wanderers FFA Cup Round of 16 clash against Palm Beach Sharks on September 1.
