Wellington Phoenix vs Newcastle Jets: Player Ratings

Wellington Phoenix made it two consecutive wins with a dominant 4-1 victory over Newcastle Jets on Sunday. Nathan Burns and Michael McGlinchey were the stand-outs but how did they rate with Griffin McMaster?

WELLINGTON PHOENIX

GLEN MOSS – 7

Made regulation saves. Couldn’t do anything on the goal, the defence went to sleep.

BEN SIGMUND – 7

Solid and not much could get past him. Also made some very important tackles.

TOM DOYLE – 7

Got better as the match went on. Kept players like Carney and Hoole quiet.

MANNY MUSCAT – 7

Defensively sound and made some good runs into the box.

ANDY DURANTE – 7.5

Got on the score sheet and controlled the back four well. Made some good tackles and interceptions as per usual.

ALEX GORRIN – 8

Helped defensively and had some good passing with Bonevacia and the front players. Solid.

ROLY BONEVACIA – 8.5

Just screams class. Very impressive. Passing was very crisp and it appears he is settling in well.

ALBERT RIERA – 8

Kept the ball well in the heart of the midfield. Always positive with the ball.

JEREMY BROCKIE – 7

Lively and assisted the opener. Played 60 minutes and also helped defensively when needed. Better shift from him.

NATHAN BURNS – 8.5

Very good. Scored two and set up one. His dribbling with the ball is fast and always threatening on the counter. Needs to learn how to finish a one-on-one though.

MICHAEL MCGLINCHEY – 8

Played down the left wing but played high. Setup a goal and scored. Great performance.

VINCE LIA – 6

Continued on with Wellington’s momentum.

KENNY CUNNINGHAM – N/A

Pacey and pretty effective when he came on with ten to go.

LOUIS FENTON – 6

Lost his man and that led to the Jets’ only goal.

NEWCASTLE JETS

MARK BIRIGHITTI – 6

First goal was not his fault. Second goal he could have done better. Third goal not to blame however fourth he was left floundering on the cross.

SCOTT NEVILLE – 5

Did not hold his ground well enough against McGlinchey and let him get in behind too many times.

SAM GALLAGHER – 5

Caught ball watching for the Phoenix’ opener. Second goal also questionable. Not his day.

DAVID CARNEY – 5

Made some adventurous runs down the left and got some deliveries into the box. Dispossesed and cost the Jets the third goal though.

KEW JALIENS – 6

Not his best performance in a Jets shirt.

MARCOS FLORES – 5.5

In and out of the game. Didn’t contribute a lot.

ANDREW HOOLE – 6

Kept Manny Muscat honest and has some good sharpness about him

ZENON CARAVELLA – 6

Wellington's midfield was too dominant so he had a difficult task. Got ran around a fair bit.

JOEL GRIFFITHS – 7

Only goal scorer with a late eader. Being played as a number ten type. Going in deep to receive the ball. Maybe he’s suited more as a true number nine.

JACOB PEPPER – 6.5

Battled on strongly. Victim of circumstance. Made some good interceptions and tackles.

EDSON MONTANO – 5

Was quiet today and got subbed off early in the second-half.

JERONIMO NEUMANN – 6

Looked lively but the damage was already done by the time he came on.

JAMES VIRGILI – 6

Again a difficult scenario with his team down after coming on.

SAMUEL GALLAWAY – 5.5

Average performance after coming on for Hoole.
