Western Sydney Wanderers vs Chelsea: Preview

More than two months after he was confirmed as Chelsea's new manager, Xabi Alonso finally takes charge of his first Blues game in their opening pre-season fixture against Western Sydney Wanderers.

The former Liverpool midfielder's managerial stock is not quite as high as it was 12 months ago, when he had just arrived at Real Madrid after a hugely successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, which included an unbeaten domestic double in 2024. However, the bearpit of the Bernabeu chewed him up and spat him out, as he was sacked just seven months into his tenure.

It means Alonso and Chelsea both have something to prove after the Blues finished 10th in the Premier League last season, in what was another chaotic campaign at Stamford Bridge.

With many of the club's World Cup 2026 stars still on holiday, the Spaniard's first line-up will bear very little resemblance to the side that starts the Premier League opener against Fulham on Monday, August 24. British-record £117m signing Morgan Rogers is among those yet to join up with the squad, but right-back Marco Palestra - who arrived from Atalanta for £47m this summer - is set to be involved.

Despite missing several of their stars, Chelsea should make light work of a Western Sydney Wanderers side who finished five points adrift at the bottom of the A-League last season.

Wanderers lost their last five games of the campaign and won just five of their 26 matches, so are unlikely to pose much of a test for Alonso's men.

After this game, Chelsea return to Accor Stadium to face London rivals Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, before heading to Hong Kong to take on Juventus next Wednesday.

They then travel to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta for a friendly against AC Milan, followed by a meeting with local side Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia. The Blues round off pre-season against Real Sociedad - Alonso's first professional club - on Saturday, August 15 at Stamford Bridge.

FourFourTwo's prediction

Western Sydney Wanderers 0-3 Chelsea

The Blues should coast to victory, giving Alonso a winning start to his reign.
