Yes, the 2018 UEFA Super Cup was actually an entertaining and high-quality game, as befits one between two of Europe’s best sides.
Will we get the same this time around? No doubt, Liverpool are still among the continental kings after winning the Champions League, but poor Frank Lampard has his work cut out at Chelsea in 2019/20. Eden Hazard was always going to leave amid a transfer ban, but the opening weekend ended in a 4-0 humping at Old Trafford, N'Golo Kanté is now injured and, frankly, this is a game (in Istanbul, of course) that Lamps could do without.
The Super Cup first officially took place in 1972, pitting the victors of Europe’s two biggest club competitions of the previous season against one another. At the time, it meant the European Cup winners vs the European Cup Winners’ Cup, erm... winners. So many winners!
In the modern day, it’s the Champions League victors against the Europa League holders, but the principle is much the same.
