Chelsea will be looking for their third win of the new Premier League season when Southampton visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Blues ran out 4-0 winners over Crystal Palace on home turf prior to the international break, with their second-half showing suggesting that Frank Lampard’s new-look side is beginning to gel.
Chelsea were heavily active in the summer transfer market, with Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Edouard Mendy having now all made their debuts for the club.
There’s still a sense that Lampard is yet to figure out his strongest starting XI, particularly as injuries have denied Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic an appearance so far in 2020/21.
Yet while the array of options at his disposal has increased the pressure on Lampard for the campaign ahead, Chelsea look in a much stronger position than they did 12 months ago.
Southampton will be aiming for a top-half finish this term. They started last season poorly and were inside the relegation zone at the midway point, but two wins from four is a decent return in the opening weeks of this campaign.
Saints were disappointing in an opening-day defeat by Crystal Palace, and were then taken apart by Tottenham in the second half of a 5-2 loss at St Mary’s. They have shown a great deal more resolve since then, overcoming Burnley and West Bromwich Albion without conceding a goal.
Another clean sheet on Saturday will be a tall order, but Ralph Hasenhuttl managed Timo Werner for two years at RB Leipzig and will hope to use that inside information to shackle the Germany international, who is still awaiting his first Premier League goal for his new club.
Chilwell is being assessed by the Chelsea medical team after picking up an injury on international duty, while Stuart Armstrong will play no part for Saints after testing positive for Covid-19.
