Watford will be looking to continue their promotion push when they travel to Stoke on Friday night.
The Hornets followed up last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Huddersfield with a 1-0 defeat of Barnsley on Tuesday. Back-to-back wins and three clean sheets in their last four games has lifted Watford back into the play-off places, but Xisco Munoz will have his sights set higher than that. Key to achieving their goals will be an improvement on the road: Watford sit 18th in the Championship away table.
Stoke are going through a sticky patch with just one win in their last nine league outings. Back-to-back draws with Blackburn and Rotherham in recent days have seen the Potters slip to eighth in the table, with five points now separating them from sixth spot. Michael O’Neill has work to do, then, and he could encourage his team to go back to basics for the visit of Watford: Stoke have not kept a clean sheet in their last four games, having kept four on the bounce before that.
Watford will be unable to call upon the services of Isaac Success, Ben Foster, Stipe Perica, Christian Kabasele, Domingos Quina and Tom Dele-Bashiru. Munoz admitted that Watford need to improve their away form earlier this week, and he will know the value of recording a first victory away from home since December 12 as the Hornets eye a place in the top two of the division.
Stoke will have to make do without Lee Gregory, Morgan Fox and Niki Maenpaa, while Tyrese Campbell is out for the season with a knee injury. Nick Powell and Steven Fletcher are fit again, but Ryan Shawcross is in isolation after a positive COVID-19 test. James McClean is also back in the fold following a club-imposed suspension for an alleged breach of coronavirus rules.
