Atletico Madrid can book their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League if results go their way on Tuesday.
A win and two draws from their first four matches in this season’s competition leaves Diego Simeone’s side in second place in Group A. Victory over Bayern Munich, the reigning champions, would move Atletico onto eight points, which would be enough for a place in the round of 16 if Lokomotiv Moscow fail to beat Red Bull Salzburg.
Atletico were thrashed 4-0 by Bayern in the first meeting between the two sides this season, but they have been much improved in La Liga since then. Indeed, Atleti are now the bookmakers’ favourites to win the title in Spain this term, with Barcelona and Real Madrid having yet to convince in 2020/21.
Bayern head into this game with the pressure off. Hansi Flick’s side have taken maximum points so far in Group A, securing their place in the knockout phase with two games to spare. Bayern are already guaranteed to advance in top spot, so Flick might be tempted to rest some of his key players ahead of this weekend’s meeting with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
Manu Sanchez, Sime Vrsaljko and Diego Costa are all injured for Atletico, and Hector Herrera will probably miss out with a muscle problem. Luis Suarez and Lucas Torreira recently returned positive COVID-19 tests, but a negative test before the game would clear either to feature. Simeone is likely to stick with his favoured 4-4-2 formation, with Yannick Carrasco likely to come back into the XI.
Bayern remain without Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich, but Niklas Sule and Corentin Tolisso are available again following injury. With Bayern’s place in the last 16 assured, players like Javi Martinez and Leroy Sane will hope to be given an opportunity from the first whistle. Marc Roja is suspended after being sent off against Red Bull Salzburg last time out.
