Frank Lampard will be demanding a response from his players when Chelsea take on Aston Villa on Monday.
The Blues were beaten for the third time in their last four games on Boxing Day, suffering a 3-1 defeat by out-of-form Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side were much the better team at the Emirates Stadium, showing more hunger, urgency and quality than their visitors. Chelsea have slipped to eighth in the table as a result of their latest setback, and they could start 2020 10 points adrift of top spot if results do not go their way this week. This is a must-win game if Lampard’s side are to challenge for the title this term.
Aston Villa climbed above Chelsea following their impressive 3-0 triumph over Crystal Palace at the weekend. Dean Smith’s side were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half-time when Tyrone Mings was given his marching orders, but that did not prevent them running out comprehensive victors. Villa, who are now unbeaten in four games, have struck an excellent balance between attack and defence so far this season. The way they are going, European qualification cannot be ruled out.
Hakim Ziyech could return to Chelsea’s matchday squad following a thigh problem, but Lampard has no other injury worries. The Blues have yet to settle on a first-choice front three this term, and we could again see changes here after Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner flanked Tammy Abraham at the Emirates. Pulisic should keep his place but Olivier Giroud and Callum Hudson-Odoi are pushing for starting berths.
Mings’ red card against Palace means he is suspended, while loanee Ross Barkley cannot feature against his parent club. Wesley Moraes and Trezeguet are still sidelined for Villa, who will probably deploy Jack Grealish as a No.10 as they did last time out.
