The allegations that Saints sent a member of staff to spy on their opponents' training session last week added extra spice to a first leg that was high on drama but low on goals.
Boro could live to regret their failure to turn a dominant display at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday lunchtime into a first-leg advantage, as Tonda Eckert's side escaped with a 0-0 draw to take into tonight's second leg at St Mary's.

Southampton vs Middlesbrough: Championship preview
There were binoculars aplenty inside the Riverside Stadium on Saturday lunchtime as fans of both Middlesbrough and Southampton made light of the allegations that a Saints staff member had been caught 'spying' on their opponents' training session in the build-up to the first leg.
However, any espionage appeared in vain as Boro dominated the visitors in a first half in which they had 17 shots to none - but crucially failed to score.
Southampton improved after the break and will look to start tonight's second leg the way they ended at the Riverside, as they eye a second Wembley appearance in less than a month.
Saints got a taste for the national stadium when they lost 2-1 to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final just over a fortnight ago, and they will back themselves to book another trip having last tasted defeat at St Mary's back in January.

The first leg followed a painfully familiar pattern for Boro, who could well have already secured their place in the Premier League were it not for poor finishing in several games towards the end of the regular season.
Kim Hellberg's side appear to have their swagger back after a poor run of form cost them automatic promotion and they need a big performance if they are to progress to the Wembley final on May 23.
Boro remain hopeful that Hayden Hackney can play a part at St Mary's after stepping up his recovery from a calf injury, but the midfielder's absence from the squad on Saturday suggests the best he can hope for is a cameo off the bench.
If he is named on the teamsheet, though, that will give everyone associated with the club a huge psychological boost.
FourFourTwo's prediction
Southampton 2-1 Middlesbrough
FourFourTwo expects Saints to continue their excellent home form and book another trip to Wembley.
