Arsenal v PSG: Match Preview

With the Premier League title officially won by Liverpool at the weekend, Arsenal's full attention turns to just their third-ever Champions League semi-final.

Having dispatched of Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate, the Gunners are considered a force to be reckoned with in the final four – though they're up against a free-flowing Paris Saint-Germain team who have knocked out English opposition in their last two ties.

The Gunners are in a sticky patch once more: form since losing Kai Havertz to injury has been mediocre at best, with Bukayo Saka still working his way back from hamstring surgery, Thomas Partey suspended for this fixture and now Mikel Merino a doubt for the game, as Mikel Arteta's auxilary no.9.

PSG, however, have problems of their own to contend with, having lost their first league game all season to Nice on Friday, extending a run of one win in the last four – which included the Aston Villa loss in which they were clinging on by the end.

Arsenal know that they've already gotten the better of Luis Enrique's side once this season, having beaten Les Parisiens 2-0 in the group phase – and the French outfit's struggles from set-pieces will be a positive for Arteta, whose side have been masters of the dead ball this season, including Saka's opener in the win over PSG last autumn.

But with PSG growing in stature with every round in this competition, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia now leading the attack and the likes of Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola on fire, this is a very different proposition.

Arsenal know how key a first-leg win can be after the Real Madrid rollocking and will be looking to call upon the Emirates Stadium for another rousing atmosphere.

The winner of this tie heads to Munich to face either Barcelona or Inter Milan – and with Arsenal's women's team already in one final, the men will be looking to do the Double.

Arsenal v PSG: Team news

Once more, Arsenal head into a key Champions League fixture this season with several question marks over vital stars.

Thomas Partey is ruled out of this one through suspension for a yellow card picked up at the Bernabeu, leaving the Gunners short in midfield: his usual replacement Jorginho, however, hasn't featured for Arsenal since he was hauled off against Brentford a few weeks back.

It looks, therefore, like Mikel Merino receding into midfield from his recent no.9 position… if, of course, the Basque battering ram makes it, too. Merino was recently omitted from the draw with Crystal Palace in the league, after a knock.

Either way, Leandro Trossard could expect a start at centre-forward for the Gunners flanked by Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice are likely to make up the midfield three, with full-backs Riccardo Calafiori and Ben White aiming for a return for this one – though Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly are more than likely to keep their places in the back four.

Finally, Gabriel is still injured, with Jakub Kiwior continuing to partner William Saliba in his absence.

No such problems for PSG, meanwhile, who have taken an embarrassment of riches with them across the channel – and given Luis Enrique's line-ups this term, we know what to expect from the freshly-crowned French champions.

Gigi Donnarumma has been a constant in goal this season, with a back four of Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho and Nuno Mendes once of the most impressive backlines in Europe this season – they'll almost certainly sit behind an all-Iberian trio of Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz in midfield.

In attack, senior heads Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele make up two-thirds of the frontline: they'll be joined by one of Desire Doue or Bradley Barcola in a free-flowing attack that looks to rotate positionally throughout the game.
