Manchester United are in talks with Cody Gakpo’s representatives about a January move for the PSV and Netherlands star, according to reports.

The 23-year-old forward has been one of the breakout stars of World Cup 2022 so far, scoring in all three of the Oranje’s group games to go joint-top of the tournament scoring charts.

He was heavily linked with a Premier League move in the summer, and Fabrizio Romano reports that a January switch is possible.

Although PSV’s original plan was to sell him in the summer, they could choose to cash in after a World Cup that will have boosted Gakpo's value from the original €50 million they wanted.

Romano says three or four clubs are in the race.

United are in talks with Gakpo’s agents, who they have a “fantastic” relationship with, as they are also the representatives of Erik ten Hag.

No official bids have been submitted yet, but Liverpool and Real Madrid are among the other clubs to have shown interest.

Leeds United and Southampton were in the race for Gakpo’s signature over the summer, but Romano says now it’s “almost impossible” for them to get a deal done.

Gakpo has been involved in 30 goals in 24 appearances for PSV this season in all competitions, scoring 13 and setting up 17.

He’s valued at €45m by Transfermarkt – although his form in Qatar could see that figure rise.
