World Cup 2026 marks the first managerial World Cup for Uzbekistan boss and former Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro, who lifted the trophy in Germany in 2006.
The AFC qualifiers get their maiden campaign underway against Colombia at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Colombia also have a foreign manager. In their case, it's Nestor Lorenzo – one of the handful of Argentine managers taking charge of teams from South America and beyond this summer.
The former Argentina assistant has been at the helm since 2022 and guided Los Cafeteros to World Cup 2026 by finishing third in an exceptionally tight CONMEBOL qualification table as part of a 28-game unbeaten run.

Uzbekistan vs Colombia: World Cup 2026 Preview
Booking a World Cup 2026 spot was relatively straightforward for Uzbekistan, too. The White Wolves finished second to Iran in both their AFC qualifying groups, and kept seven clean sheets in their final 10 games as an indication of where their strengths lie. Manchester City centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov is only 22 but has been superb for club and country this season.
Colombia failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2022 but have made it out of the groups in each of their past two World Cups, reaching the round of 16 in 2018 and the quarter-finals four years earlier.
The latter performance, inspired James Rodriguez's work-of-art volley against Uruguay, was their best to date, despite being highly rated going into the tournament the last time it was held in the United States. Their group-stage exit in 1994 was part of a tragic sequence of events in which Andres Escobar was shot dead back home soon after scoring an own goal against the US.
This is the first senior international between these teams and it could have a huge effect on the outcome of Group K, which is completed by Portugal and DR Congo. They met in Houston earlier.
Colombia's first two matches will both be played in Mexico before they face Portugal at Hard Rock Stadium in their final group fixture.
