Sheffield United will be looking for their first victory of the season at the 17th time of asking when they face Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Chris Wilder’s side remain winless following a 1-0 defeat by Burnley on Tuesday. The Blades are already 11 points adrift of safety and face an uphill struggle to maintain their top-flight status after being the surprise package of the 2019/20 campaign. No team in Premier League history has had fewer points to their name at this stage of the season, but Wilder insists his team will not give up in their battle to avoid the drop. Anything other than a win here, though, would leave their chances of survival hanging by a thread.
Palace succeeded in stopping the rot last time out, drawing 1-1 with Leicester at Selhurst Park after back-to-back losses to Liverpool (0-7) and Aston Villa (0-3). Roy Hodgson’s men are now without a win in five matches, however, and have slipped to within eight points of the bottom three at the start of 2021. They are also without a clean sheet since the opening weekend of the season, and have conceded more goals than their upcoming opponents so far. Palace will be desperate to return to winning ways against a Sheffield United side severely short of confidence.
The Blades will again be without John Lundstram, who remains suspended. Oliver McBurnie is in line to return following a knock, but Jack O’Connell is a long-term absentee and Sander Berge will not play again until March at the earliest.
James Tomkins returned to the Palace backline in the draw with Leicester and is likely to again start alongside Cheikhou Kouyate here. Gary Cahill is missing with a hamstring injury and Mamadou Sakho is also sidelined, while Nathan Ferguson, Martin Kelly, Wayne Hennessey and Connor Wickham remain out.
