Northern Ireland can ruin Italy’s chances of reaching the 2022 World Cup when the two sides clash on Monday night.
The European champions’ 1-1 draw with Switzerland in Rome on Friday means they head to Belfast needing to match or better the result the second-placed Swiss get at home to Bulgaria – barring a big swing in goal difference.
As it stands, Roberto Mancini’s side are top of Group C with 15 points, but only ahead of Switzerland thanks to having a goal difference of +13, two better than their rivals.
Ian Baraclough’s side are already out of the qualification frame, but will be hoping to beat Bulgaria to third place, with both sides on eight points going into the final round.
The hosts have a couple of injury problems after Paddy McNair and Stuart Dallas didn’t train on Sunday.
But that is nothing compared to the issues facing the Italians, who are without a host of players including Ciro Immobile, Giorgio Chiellini, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Nicolo Zaniolo, Davide Calabria and Alessandro Bastoni.
Mancini looks likely to deploy Lorenzo Insigne as a false nine at Windsor Park.
History is firmly on the Azzurri’s side, with Northern Ireland winning once in their 10 meetings with Italy, in January 1958, and failing to score in their last six encounters, a run stretching back to April 1961.
