Everton will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run when they take on West Ham on New Year’s Day.
The Toffees were not in action in midweek, as an outbreak of coronavirus in the Manchester City camp led to the postponement of their trip to Goodison Park. That denied Everton the chance to further close the gap with the top of the table, but victory on the first day of 2021 would keep them on the heels of local rivals Liverpool. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have won each of their last four matches in the Premier League, overcoming Chelsea, Leicester, Arsenal and Sheffield United while only conceding one goal. At this rate, a top-four finish looks like a realistic objective for Everton.
West Ham’s ambitions are not quite as lofty, but they have exceeded many people’s expectations so far this term. However, a failure to win any of their last four matches has seen David Moyes’ men drop into the bottom half of the table, and the Scot will be keen to end his team’s winless run against his former employers. A 0-0 draw with Southampton on Tuesday was a respectable result, though, and Moyes will have been pleased with West Ham’s first clean sheet in seven outings.
Everton will once again have to make do without Richarlison, but James Rodriguez could return to the matchday squad. Allan remains sidelined with a hamstring injury and Lucas Digne is out for at least another month, while Fabian Delph and Jean-Phillipe Gbamin are also on the treatment table.
West Ham will be unable to call upon the services of Arthur Masuaku, who is out with a knee injury. Michail Antonio returned to the fold against Southampton and could be ready to lead the line here, having come off the bench at St Mary’s.
