Ronald Koeman was a classic Barcelona manager in many ways: a former midfield general for Los Cules, he scored the goal that secured Barça their first European Cup in 1992, and has made no secret of his desire to man the Nou Camp dugout. And he's Dutch, which always helps.

But he'd won no major trophy as a manager since 2008, and was walking into disaster in Catalonia. Financial mess, boardroom splits, and an unhappy star player.
