England can take another step closer to booking a place at the 2022 World Cup by beating Hungary on Tuesday.
The result, in truth, was never in doubt, and it leaves England a maximum of two wins away from securing qualification for Qatar. The process has been smooth up to now, with England having amassed 19 points from a possible 21. A 1-1 draw with Poland is the only blot on their copybook, and England were moments away from winning that match in Warsaw anyway.
Bigger tests lie ahead, though, and those who have followed the national team for more than a few years will know that successful qualification campaigns do not always translate into successful tournaments. England have at least demonstrated an ability to perform well on the biggest stage under Southgate, but matches like Tuesday’s against Bulgaria do not offer an opportunity for them to show they have overcome their biggest weakness: a tendency towards caution against opponents of equal strength.
Southgate will ring the changes for the visit of Hungary, with the likes of Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Jordan Pickford, Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker expected to be restored to the side. Kalvin Phillips is injured, so Jordan Henderson is expected to play in midfield. Luke Shaw is in contention to start too, but Ben Chilwell will hope to keep his place.
