Faroe Islands v Scotland live stream, Tuesday 12 October, 7.45pm BST
Scotland have the chance to tighten their grip on second place in Group F when they travel to the Faroe Islands on Tuesday night.
Steve Clarke’s side took a huge step towards a play-off place last time out, beating Israel 3-2 in a thrilling contest at Hampden Park. Scotland twice fell behind as Eran Zahavi and Munas Dabbur put the visitors to Glasgow 1-0 and 2-1 up, but Lyndon Dykes restored parity by making it 2-2 shortly before the hour mark.
A draw would not have been a disastrous result for Scotland, but they refused to settle for a point and were rewarded in dramatic circumstances. In the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time Scott McTominay struck to send Hampden into raptures.
Scotland are now four points clear of Israel and Austria in the race for second. Top spot is already out of reach due to Denmark’s sensational form – they boast a 100 per cent winning record and are yet to concede a goal – but Scotland are now in pole position to advance to the play-offs. Indeed, victories over the Faroe Islands and Moldova would put them out of the reach of Israel and Austria before Denmark visit Hampden Park on matchday 10.
Reaching a major international tournament remains a pipe dream for the Faroes, whose objective is instead to improve on results in their previous qualification campaign.
That now looks unlikely: the Faroe Islands have amassed four points from their first seven matches, and look set to fall short of the nine they picked up in qualification for the 2018 World Cup. Still, they beat Moldova at home last month and are capable of making life difficult for Scotland if the latter takes their eye off the ball.
Clarke has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Tuesday’s match and is therefore likely to stick with the XI which beat Israel on Saturday.
