The clash between the two powerhouses is a repeat of the Euro 2020 semi-final, when they couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes and the Azzurri triumphed on penalties.
This is the second edition of UEFA’s new international tournament, after Portugal won the inaugural trophy, and features the four group winners of the League A section.
Italy topped Group A1 ahead of the Netherlands, Poland and Bosnia-Herezegovina to reach the mini-tournament, going unbeaten in the process.
Meanwhile, Spain won Group A4 ahead of Germany, Ukraine and Switzerland, topped off with a memorable 6-0 thrashing of the Germans in their final game.
The winners will face Belgium or France, who face off in Turin on Thursday, in the final, again at Milan’s iconic Giuseppe Meazza stadium.
“We hope to play a good semi-final and, if possible, also a good final. These are the four best European countries and, for us, the Nations League is important. Everybody will be given a chance to play – not only those who won EURO 2020,” Italy manager Roberto Mancini said.
Despite his comments, Mancini’s squad is largely made up of his Euros winners, although he will be without injured striker Ciro Immobile.
Luis Enrique lost talented young Barcelona midfielder Pedri and Atletico Madrid’s Marcos Llorente to injury ahead of the international break.
