Chelsea vs Arsenal: Women's Champions League preview

The WSL heavyweights face off at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, in the second leg of a Champions League quarter-final, with Arsenal bringing a two-goal advantage to the tie.

The Gunners remain unbeaten against the Blues this season after a win and a draw in the WSL and an impressive first-leg showing that saw them win 3-1 at Emirates Stadium.

The first leg was marred with VAR controversy, after Chelsea had a goal ruled out for a minimal push. Sonia Bompastor described it as "not good enough" calling for officials to "respect the women's game."

But the tie is far from over from a Chelsea perspective. They found themselves in a similar situation last year at this stage of the competition, where they were able to overturn a 2-0 scoreline to beat Manchester City 3-2 at the Bridge.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are less used to being in the lead in the competition, earning themselves a reputation of being comeback queens last season.

Former Arsenal star Alex Scott has told FourFourTwo exclusively that her former team's heritage in the competition will be an extra incentive for Chelsea to dump the holders out of the competition.

“From when I was playing, from the moment Emma Hayes left Arsenal and took over Chelsea, straight away it was this rivalry because we knew the nuggets that she was taking from Arsenal and implementing them at Chelsea and building this phenomenal team - everything that she went on to do and win there is absolutely incredible,” Scott said.

“I know how much it hurt Chelsea players and fans to see Arsenal lifting the Champions League trophy last season. Because that's the one that they are missing and have after for so long. So it's just going to be so juicy. If Chelsea beat Arsenal, you won't stop hearing about it. But if Arsenal manage to get one over Chelsea again… it’s just an exciting tie. And that's what you love about football, right?

"It is a tough one to call, but I do think Arsenal might edge it.”

Leah Williamson missed out in the first leg, and Renee Slegers will give an update on her fitness ahead of the match.

Australian duo Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter were unavailable for the first leg following the Asian Cup but are now back, with Bompastor to advise on their availability.
