North Macedonia will be looking to complete a historic double by beating Germany for the second time in this World Cup qualification campaign.
Die Mannschaft have changed manager since then, with Hansi Flick replacing Joachim Low after the European Championship. That loss in March has not really affected Germany’s prospects; they have won each of their other six games and sit top of Group J, six points clear of the chasing pack. Germany were not overly convincing against Romania on Friday, however. They fell behind to an early goal from Ianis Hagi, and did not find the winner until the 81st minute.
A win here would virtually secure top spot for Germany, while North Macedonia are neck-and-neck with Armenia in the race for second. Romania are two points back and retain hope of qualifying for Qatar, particularly as they have already played Germany twice.
Flick could hand a start to Florian Wirtz, the 18-year-old attacking midfielder who is lighting up the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. Manuel Neuer is out injured, so Marc-Andre ter Stegen will continue between the sticks.
Goran Pandev has now hung up his boots, so North Macedonia are relying on contributions from the likes of Aleksandar Trajkovski and Milan Ristovski to replace their erstwhile talisman’s goals. Tihomir Kostadinov is available following suspension, but Visar Musliu is out injured.
