Middlesbrough must do without record signing Afonso Alves for the remainder of their relegation battle after he broke a metatarsal bone in his foot.
The Brazilian striker, who cost around 12 million pounds when he signed from Dutch club Heerenveen in January 2008, was injured in Monday's 3-1 Premier League defeat at Newcastle United.
"He will take no further part in this season's campaign after scans revealed the extent of the injury," the club said on their website on Tuesday.
Middlesbrough are three points behind fourth from bottom Newcastle with two games left. The bottom three go down.
Boro are at home to Aston Villa at the weekend before finishing the season at West Ham United.
