Braga beat Maritimo to retain top spot

LISBON - Braga beat Maritimo 2-1 away to retain top spot in the Portuguese Premier League on Sunday as second-placed teams Benfica and Porto posted comfortable wins to keep up the pressure on the leaders.

Maritimo opened the scoring through a Miguel Angelo header in the eighth minute but Joao Pereira equalised five minutes before halftime and Meyong sealed the win for Braga with a penalty in the 83rd minute.

Benfica thrashed Belenenses 4-0 away on Sunday and champions Porto beat Leixoes 4-1 at home on Saturday.

Braga lead on 12 points with four wins from four games, followed by Benfica and Porto on 10 points.
